On Nov. 30, 1864, what’s been described as “a brutal, large-scale battle” is fought near Franklin, Tennessee, where the Confederate Army of Tennessee attacked entrenched Union forces under Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield. The Confederates launched a massive frontal assault and suffered heavy casualties, including six generals killed or mortally wounded. The Battle of Franklin's outcome was a tactical disaster for the Confederacy, weakening the Army of Tennessee before its final defeat at Nashville.
